华纳的《德国建筑艺术在中国》可以说是真正以历史文献和现场调查为基础的“在青岛的德国建筑”研究的开端。华纳的研究在1993年完成。10多年中，华纳在德国的指导教师和青岛本地年轻的研究人员，陆续修订了华纳当年的一些错误，使得在青岛的德国建筑的基本面貌有了一个比较完成的呈现。华纳之后的研究成果，多是在青岛本地的媒介和出版物上发表的。
